A Bit Too Much

I was looking through the tumblrs in the Humor Directory here, and I must say they were rather disappointing.  Most were just one-liners, pictures, or videos I’d seen for the hundredth time already. 

It wasn’t just one or two tumblrs like this; every single one is just a hoard of quotes, pictures, and videos which the author found thought provoking or funny or symbolic of his or her own life.They make me laugh, true, but that’s it. I’m not exactly a more enlightened person because of them.  I wanted funny stories, original jokes, or just something fresh and new.

About 6 weeks ago, my friend Liza came to me saying she really needed some advice.  I was naturally concerned. “What is it?” I asked, ready to sympathize with her latest boy troubles or family issues.  Liza is so extraordinarily extroverted and always has so many things going on in her life that there’s always some little trouble afoot.  However, this wasn’t the case today.

“So, I don’t really know where the idea came from, but I was just thinking and I decided,” she paused for dramatic effect, and I lent her the satisfaction of seeing curiosity with just a touch of concern steal across my face.  At the same time, she lowered her eyes and fiddled with her bracelet, feigning reluctance. All for show, I thought. That’s Liza, ever the actress.  “I want to get a blog!”

And it was a perfect idea for her. She’s always worked up about some new political situation or righteous cause, and now she could spread her ideas like seeds on the wind beyond the confines of this claustrophobic Podunk town; and I told her as much.  The reason she’d come for advice, though, was she had one reservation:

Here I am, considering what I could possibly write to kick off this tumblr, and I just realized I don’t even know why I made it. Maybe it was boredom that did it. After all, this small town of mine seems to shrink with every passing day, and the internet only provides so much entertainment before one yearns to do more. To interact. So is that what this is? My first attempts to interact with the internet citizens of the world? I’m not sure, but it sounds nice and so will suffice for the now.
